CLARIN Centres in the Netherlands

CLARIN-NL aims to set up Centres in order to provide persistency of data, services and tools in a standardized way. At this time, there are two different types of CLARIN Centres.

Full Centres

First of all, there are ‘full’ CLARIN Centres offering various types of services to the research community. Full Centres will host their own data and tools as well as those from “other parties”. These Centres take care for the sustainability of data and tools and the permanent access to them.

A number of organizations intend to become a full CLARIN Centre and are working towards this status, but at this moment (February 2012) there are no officially recognized CLARIN Centres.

Full Centres Profiles

For each full centre, we specify which resource types it focuses on.

INL	that are relevant to the lexicological study of the Dutch language and on resources relevant for research in and development of language and speech technology.	lexicons, lexical databases, text corpora, speech corpora, language and speech technology tools, etc. For more examples, see here
DANS	sustained access to digital research data.The DANS data archive contains thousands of datasets in the fields of humanities including oral history, archaeology, geospatial sciences and behavioural and social sciences. The data archive has acquired the Data Seal of Approval. Regarding the conditions under which access to the data is granted, the DANS motto is “Open Access when possible, Restricted Access when necessary”.	text resources, databases, spreadsheets, audio and audio-visual resources. Data Providers

In 2011, CLARIN-NL introduced a new centre type, namely CLARIN Data Provider. CLARIN-NL decided to define this new type of centre, because there is a range of centres in the Netherlands (and elsewhere) that by their very nature and mission archive large amounts of dedicated data. Moreover, these organizations give the research community access to (most of) their data. CLARIN-NL wants these data to be visible and accessible in a transparent and standardized manner in the CLARIN infrastructure. However, due to their nature, these organizations will not host data or tools from “third parties”, which prevent them from becoming a full CLARIN Centre. A couple of organizations have been invited to become CLARIN Data Provider. Some of them alreaydy started working towards becoming a CLARIN Data Provider, others are preparing their plans. They include the Instituut voor Beeld en Geluid, the Koninklijke Bibliotheek, the Digitale Bibliotheek der Nederlandse Letteren (DBNL), the Nationaal Archief, and university libraries starting with the Universiteitsdbibliotheek Utrecht.
